According to a recent statement of the company itself, Costco will soon become one of the greatest sellers of organic products in the US.
They were additionally motivated by their customers who recently rallied in Seattle to deliver over 50,000 signatures asking the company not to sell genetically modified salmon. So, Costco finally takes a stand on GMO salmon.
By this act, Costco joined a list of retailers who also said that they will no longer sell genetically modified salmon, despite the approval by the federal Food and Drugs Administration of the sale of such fish.
Despite the fact that the FDA has approved the sale of genetically modified salmon, Costco has not been selling it and does not even intends to do so at this time, the warehouse store chain stated.
The FDA approved the sale of the AquAdvantage Salmon, which is a genetically modified fish that grows twice as fast as the normal salmon, with the excuse that ‘there are no biologically significant differences in the nutritional profile of AquAdvantage Salmon compared to that of other farm-raised Atlantic salmon.’
The Massachusetts-based company AquaBounty is the company that engineered the AquAdvantage Salmon, saying that the fish could be found on the grocery stores’ shelves in nearly two years.
We really support the decision of Costco to join retailers such as Whole Foods, Safeway, and Trader Joe’s and to stop selling genetically modified products whatsoever.
